Requirements
Must:
We are looking for candidates who have:
- A degree in a relevant area or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- A proactive and positive problem-solving mindset.

- Previous experience in senior team management, providing leadership in the delivery of a large IT infrastructure across multiple data centers.
- Experience building long-term IT service roadmaps with a user community and successfully delivering on those roadmaps.
- Technical understanding in some of the following areas: High performance computing (HPC), high performance storage (e.g., Lustre, VAST, Weka), large-scale storage (particularly object storage), WAN, and data center networking.
- Experience with large-scale hardware purchasing, managing substantial budgets, and long-term economic planning.
- The ability to build and maintain professional relationships at all organizational levels, including senior management, peers, and both technical and non-technical staff.
- Excellent communication skills to understand stakeholder needs and convey technology options and opportunities.
Responsibilities
In this role, my duties will include:
- Defining the team’s roadmap and aligning it with the broader IT and EMBL-EBI mission, including setting the technical direction and development of our infrastructure.
- Collaborating with the Head of IT and other ITS team leaders to develop and deliver the ITS strategy.
- Fostering a service-oriented mindset within the team, prioritizing reliable and user-friendly solutions.
- Building strong relationships with internal stakeholders at EMBL-EBI, ensuring our services are tailored to meet their specific requirements.
- Overseeing the design, implementation, and operation of EMBL-EBI IT infrastructure while continuously improving existing solutions for enhanced reliability, performance, and adaptability.
- Providing guidance and support to team members, ensuring they have the necessary tools and resources to succeed, and facilitating their professional development through training and growth opportunities.
Description
As the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), we are a non-profit intergovernmental organization funded by 29 member states, one associate member state, and two prospective member states. Our team comprises over 2,000 personnel from more than 80 nations, located across six sites: Heidelberg, Hinxton, Grenoble, Hamburg, Rome, and Barcelona. At EMBL-EBI, we operate a substantial infrastructure estate to support our world-leading life sciences services, training, and research, which includes 500PB of raw storage, high bandwidth networks, and multiple High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters. The Head of Infrastructure Services will lead a multidisciplinary IT team responsible for the operation and evolution of this massive infrastructure, crucially ensuring operational excellence, efficiency, and continuous alignment of our services to the needs of a dynamic research and service delivery organization. We support hybrid working arrangements but require on-site presence for at least two days a week.
