We are looking for candidates who possess proven technical competence in software engineering specifically within a safety-critical or regulated domain, such as rail, automotive, aerospace, medical, or industrial. You should have an in-depth understanding of BS EN 50716, BS EN 50128, and/or BS EN 50657, alongside experience in software lifecycle assurance, assessment, or certification to Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) 1–4. A strong grasp of quality, configuration, validation, and verification processes is essential, as well as familiarity with safety management systems, risk assessment, and change control processes. We value analytical thinking, keen observation skills, and the ability to synthesize diverse evidence into a clear compliance view. Additionally, you should possess excellent documentation and reporting skills, demonstrating the capability to produce robust and auditable reports. Recognition or acceptance by a relevant safety authority is advantageous, as is the ability to work independently while engaging constructively with suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders.
Responsibilities
As a Software Assurance Engineer, you will develop a comprehensive understanding of the software and its operational environment. You will be responsible for producing and maintaining a Software Assessment Plan in accordance with BS EN 50716 requirements. Evaluating the conformity of the software process and deliverables to applicable standards and assigned SIL levels will be a key part of your role. You will assess the competence of project personnel and the adequacy of our organization's development processes, and evaluate verification, validation, configuration management, and quality management systems, ensuring there is traceable evidence of compliance. Conducting safety audits and inspections at appropriate development phases, including witnessing testing activities, will also be necessary. You will identify, assess, and document any non-conformities or deviations from requirements, evaluating their safety impact. It will be your duty to ensure the implementation of the assessment plan and document all findings clearly in a Software Assessment Report. Additionally, you will provide independent professional judgment on the software's fitness for purpose, including any constraints, assumptions, or risks, while maintaining thorough assessment records and offering recommendations for improvement or risk control.
Description
This is a highly responsible and independent role that demands deep technical competence, analytical ability, and a strong understanding of safety standards and lifecycle assurance within complex embedded or control software systems. The successful candidate will work one day per week onsite and receive a competitive salary ranging from £65,000 to £80,000.
