Requirements
Must:
- Strong experience with VB6 including forms, modules, class modules, COM/ActiveX, API calls, ADO/ODBC
- Proven ability in legacy remediation within regulated environments, diagnosing runtime faults, dependency drift, and security gaps
- Familiarity with moving from Ingres or similar RDBMS, and comfort working with DBAs on schema, queries, and performance
- Practical expertise in quality engineering, including test design, defect triage, and readiness for multi-phase testing (SIT/E2E/UAT/OAT)
- Experience with version control systems such as Git or TFS, along with lightweight design documentation skills
- Effective communication skills for engaging with stakeholders and collaborating within teams
Responsibilities
- Analyze VB6 applications including forms, modules, class libraries, and COM components to map dependencies and legacy database touchpoints
- Design and implement low-risk remediation strategies, including data access abstraction, error handling hardening, and performance fixes
- Collaborate with database engineers to plan and validate schema and data migration while optimizing SQL queries post-migration
- Build and execute comprehensive test plans with Quality Assurance, covering unit, functional, regression, and non-functional testing
- Contribute to release documentation and change approvals; support rehearsals and cutovers as necessary
- Adhere to governance standards for security, data protection, and auditability while maintaining current artefacts
- Participate in agile ceremonies and coordinate with other programme streams and Model Office activities
- Mentor best practices across teams focusing on code quality, security, and performance
Description
We are seeking a VB6 Engineer for a rolling 3-month contract, expected to last 12-15 months, with a competitive day rate of £530. This role is hybrid, requiring 1-2 days on-site each week in Telford. In this position, you will work to remediate, stabilize, and modernize VB6 applications while ensuring compliance and risk reduction. You will collaborate with various stakeholders including architects and database specialists, contributing to the teams success in implementing secure and supportable fixes.
