We are looking for a Software Development Manager with proven experience in managing software engineering teams within a structured development environment. You should have strong expertise in JIRA, as it’s essential for building, structuring, and driving processes. A deep understanding of software development lifecycles, particularly Waterfall, along with practical exposure to Agile methodologies (Scrum/Kanban) is necessary. You must possess confident team leadership and stakeholder engagement skills to effectively manage upwards and across departments. Comfort in technical environments with embedded, electronics, or robotics products is crucial, though hands-on coding is not required. We seek a professional and approachable communication style since interviews will involve senior leadership and HR. Moreover, you need to be based within one hour of our Surrey office and be able to be onsite three days a week in a hybrid model – full remote working is not an option. It's important that you have prior UK work experience, as we are not open to candidates relocating back to the UK without recent local employment.
Responsibilities
In this role, I would have you lead a team of 12 software engineers working across embedded systems, Linux, Microsoft, and desktop applications (with no cloud-based work). You will own and optimize JIRA usage across the department by structuring workflows, dashboards, and reporting to enhance delivery and transparency. Coaching and mentoring software engineers to raise their capability and accountability will be a key part of your responsibility. You’ll also implement and evolve our software development processes, primarily using Waterfall with some Kanban/Scrum as applicable. Supporting the delivery of long-cycle regulatory projects while closely collaborating with hardware, test, and project management teams is essential. As you work in partnership with international stakeholders and global teams, light hands-on testing may be required as needed to support team outcomes. Furthermore, building a stronger engineering culture by instilling best practices in coding, testing, documentation, and delivery will be crucial to your role.
