Requirements
Must:
- Strong understanding of public sector strategy, policy, and service delivery models
- Proven experience leading architecture across complex digital programmes
- Familiarity with Agile and hybrid delivery models
- Experience managing legacy-to-modern transitions
- Deep expertise in cloud, infrastructure, and emerging technologies within regulated environments
- Highly skilled in stakeholder engagement and influencing senior leaders
- Experience in architectural governance and technical assurance
- Ability to align technical solutions to clear business outcomes
- Strong commercial awareness of public sector procurement, cost optimisation, and value delivery
Responsibilities
- Lead the architecture for substantial, high-value, and multifaceted solutions
- Set architectural standards and provide clear technical direction
- Guide delivery teams through pragmatic, well-informed decision making
- Drive enterprise-wide architecture promoting reuse and interoperability
- Ensure digital services are operationally sustainable and cyber resilient
- Translate organisational strategy into actionable technical architectures
- Communicate architectural decisions effectively across the business context
- Provide strategic technical leadership across complex digital programmes
- Develop best practice for IT Technology architecture for continuous improvement
- Create technical designs for solutions of high complexity and risk
- Lead teams of junior architects and build relationships with senior stakeholders
Description
At National Highways, we manage and improve Englands motorways and major A roads, helping our customers have safer, smoother, and more reliable journeys. The Digital Services Directorate is reshaping how we operate by implementing digital, data, and technology services in a modern and efficient manner. We aim to develop integrated information and technology that empowers our colleagues and offers real-time information to our customers, while integrating with intelligent vehicle and transport systems to enhance journey safety and reliability. This hybrid role requires two days per week in the office and is based at any National Highways office location.
