Requirements
Must:
- Significant experience in a systems or infrastructure engineering role
- Strong administration experience with Windows Server and Microsoft SQL Server
- Experience managing virtualised environments
- Microsoft 365, Azure AD (Entra ID), and Intune administration
- Solid understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs)
- Experience with backup and disaster recovery solutions
- Practical experience implementing security controls and patching processes
- Strong troubleshooting skills across infrastructure and networking
- Experience contributing to compliance frameworks such as ISO 27001 or Cyber Essentials
- Takes ownership of work and delivers high-quality results consistently
- Shares knowledge with colleagues to achieve shared goals
- Uses data-driven thinking to inform decisions and balance experimentation with measurable outcomes
- Maintains professional standards, contributing positively to team culture and organisational reputation
- Desirable:
- Experience with Fortigate firewall products
- Experience working in regulated or security-conscious environments
- Linux and Ansible knowledge
- Exposure to vulnerability management tooling
- Scripting and automation experience (PowerShell preferred)
- Ability to obtain UK security clearance
Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain Windows Server environments (physical and virtual)
- Administer virtualisation platforms using Proxmox and VMware
- Maintain core infrastructure services including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, file services, and authentication
- Support physical infrastructure including servers, storage, and networking hardware
- Oversee system lifecycle management, including upgrades and decommissioning
- Plan and execute regular patching of servers and infrastructure systems
- Participate in a scheduled monthly maintenance window, including up to one weekend day per month
- Ensure systems remain secure, compliant, and up to date
- Proactively identify and remediate vulnerabilities
- Administer Microsoft 365, Azure AD (Entra ID), and Intune
- Manage identity, access controls, and conditional access policies
- Support LAN/WAN, firewalls, VPNs, and switching infrastructure
- Troubleshoot connectivity and performance issues
- Liaise with third-party providers where required
- Maintain and regularly test backup and recovery solutions
- Support disaster recovery planning and testing
- Ensure business continuity requirements are met
- Support ISO 27001 controls, evidence gathering, and audit preparation
- Maintain technical documentation and system records
- Assist with risk assessments and remediation activities
- Apply security best practices including least privilege and multi-factor authentication
- Deliver infrastructure upgrades, migrations, and system rollouts
- Provide 3rd-line escalation support for complex technical issues
- Automate routine tasks using PowerShell or similar scripting tools
Description
We are looking for a hands-on Senior IT Systems Engineer to take ownership of our core infrastructure across on-premise and cloud environments. This is a broad infrastructure role covering server and virtualisation management, patching and lifecycle maintenance, network support, backup and recovery, and contribution to ISO 27001 controls and audits.
