Must:
We are looking for candidates with a Bachelor's degree (BSc) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field. Alternatively, relevant experience in firmware development using specific tools and environments will also be considered. It is essential to have experience in the design of both digital and analogue electronics, with a focus on FPGA design. A comprehensive understanding of the full firmware/programmable logic product development cycle, including simulation, design verification, and design for manufacture is critical. Proficiency with tools such as Xilinx ISE/Vivado workflow, ModelSim, and ActiveHDL is highly desirable. Additionally, knowledge of DSP, Xilinx, Rust, SQL, and high-speed VHDL is necessary, along with familiarity with communications protocols such as USB, Ethernet, and EtherCAT. Experience with microcontrollers including BareMetal, RTOS, FPGA, SOC, SOM, as well as VHDL and Verilog is essential. We also prefer candidates who have experience in developing Windows drivers and a solid understanding of programming languages like C and C++. Familiarity with GIT Version Control is preferred, as well as experience with scripting tools such as Bash, Python, or TCL.
Responsibilities
In this role, I will be responsible for the following:
- Designing and developing new firmware code.
- Optimizing firmware code for performance and resource utilization.
- Conducting peer reviews of completed firmware code.
- Supporting existing systems through thorough investigation and resolution of issues related to firmware functionality and interaction.
- Developing and executing test plans for firmware, inclusive of system integration testing.
- Designing, implementing, and testing firmware for embedded systems, FPGAs, SoCs, and PLDs.
- Investigating Design Change Requests (DCR) to determine required work functions and estimating completion dates effectively.
- Raising Manufacturing Change Notes (MCN) for design changes and enhancements in accordance with DCR procedures.
- Defining firmware requirements for given systems through close collaboration with project stakeholders.
- Conducting peer reviews of supporting project documentation, including Verification Reports and other R&D documents.
- Adhering to work procedures that align with all Kratos released processes and systems.
- Suggesting modifications to business systems that may enhance business and engineering activities.
- Acting as a member of the engineering body responsible for completing verification and validation tests for any changes to systems, including engineering workflow systems, software applications, release versions, file management systems, and associated business processes.

This position is situated within our Research and Development (R&D) department and reports directly to the Surface Analysis Group Manager. As a Surface Analysis Firmware Engineer, you will play a key role in the design and development of low-level software that powers the functionality of advanced scientific instruments and systems. Your expertise will be pivotal in optimizing system performance through close collaboration with both hardware and software engineering teams. Your contributions will be integral to the success of our innovative projects within the organization.
