We are looking for a candidate who can demonstrate their ability to:
1. Understand and convey the agreed strategic view across all architectural domains, platforms, portfolios, and programs within a Business Domain / Cluster. This includes applying a solid understanding of the organization's ecosystem and its interdependencies.
2. Provide proactive consultation to a range of Change and Architecture stakeholders, offering expert advice on specific enterprise-level ambitions related to capability impact, which helps inform the production of more detailed architectural designs.
3. Create "As Is" and "To Be" capability-based technology impacts that strategically shape enterprise-level transformational change. Utilize this understanding to help define our IT Strategy, inform IT Platform roadmaps, support early delivery planning, and ensure alignment with relevant business, product, and commercial strategies & roadmaps.
4. Be responsible for socializing and promoting our strategies and enterprise-level impacts with peers and senior managers across multiple stakeholder communities.
Responsibilities
As the Lead Solution Architect (LSA), you will be expected to:
- Provide leadership and vision for the Unity Technical Services (UTS) architecture, including creating architectural strategy, direction, guidance, and vision while championing leading practices and assuring services.
- Regularly collaborate with senior stakeholders, providing direction and challenge while proactively identifying problems and translating them into widely understood, non-technical descriptions.
- Define conceptual and logical architecture specifications (e.g., data, application, and technical architecture) for UTS.
- Own and ensure that technical architecture decisions are consistent across the enterprise, leveraging opportunities for common approaches.
- Lead efforts to develop technical architecture approaches for all solution layers within UTS, including solution estimations and consulting on program delivery planning and models.
- Assess and recommend infrastructure and application solutions for upgrades based on business needs.
- Support lines of business and technology areas that are implementing projects impacting the technical architecture.
- Collaborate with the wider HMRC Solution and Enterprise architect teams to facilitate and lead continuous improvement activities within HMRC, sharing best practices and developing others.
Description
Essential Criteria: 1. Leadership in Architecture: Proven experience in leading architectural and solution design functions, providing architectural strategy, direction, and assurance across programs. A record of building and managing stakeholders across organizational boundaries, including experience with modeling tools and documenting processes aligning with business and technology strategies. 2. Stakeholder Engagement: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and translate complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences. 3. Technical Expertise: Extensive experience at a senior level with various ERP IT domain systems (e.g., SAP ERP, S4 HANA, Success Factors) and familiarity with corporate services domains like Finance and HR. Experience in designing IT solutions that deliver business benefits and knowledge of Azure, AWS, microservices, and SaaS/PaaS/IaaS architecture. 4. Strategic Thinking: Ability to align solution designs with organizational strategy and IT roadmaps, driving technological change in complex environments. 5. Collaboration and Governance: Experience working across business and technical teams to ensure architectural coherence and understanding of architecture governance and compliance standards. Capability to manage 3rd party technical supplier agreements in a structured, governed manner. Capability Allowance: The advertised role is part of the Government Digital and Data Profession and offers a Capability-Based Allowance. Successful candidates will undergo a Capability and Skills Assessment post-interview, with allowance awarded based on assessed capability against the skills advertised for this role. This allowance is non-contractual, subject to an annual review, and can be withdrawn at any time. Total compensation includes base salary and, if applicable, a capability-based allowance. New entrants will start at the pay range minimum, and existing civil servant policies will apply.
