Requirements

Must:
We are looking for candidates with extensive experience in software development, particularly in JavaScript (Node.js or browser-based). You should have a good knowledge of relational databases, including designing tables, views, and constraints. Experience working in a collaborative professional software development environment is essential, as is proficiency in a UNIX/Linux environment, utilizing command-line tools and version control. You should have an understanding of modern software development practices and tooling, such as Continuous Integration/Deployment, automated testing, linting, and performance benchmarking. An enthusiasm for learning about human genetics is important, along with the ability to produce consistent and compelling user experiences. You should also be able to deliver a high-quality product on time with careful attention to detail.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will design, develop, and support the DECIPHER platform, extending its functionality and keeping it up to date with cutting-edge scientific knowledge. Your specific responsibilities will include designing and implementing data structures and user interfaces to represent information relating to the human genome and genetic disorders. You will investigate, retrieve, and reshape data from other resources while upholding and refining expectations for code quality, conventions, and development practices. You will review code written by other developers and identify areas for improvement, respond to bug reports, and requests for support or new features, collaborating with stakeholders to understand their requirements. Identifying causes of performance issues and developing optimizations to maintain a responsive and stable service will be part of your role. You will also identify and evaluate new technological opportunities and advocate for their adoption as part of team planning activities. Additionally, you will liaise with other groups at EMBL-EBI and externally to explain requirements, optimize data presentation, and agree on standards for data representation.

Description

You may also have experience in developing reactive, data-driven web applications in JavaScript frameworks such as Vue, React, or Angular. Familiarity with scripting languages such as Bash, Perl, or Python, as well as experience in designing and leading software projects and managing genomics data, would be advantageous. The contract length for this position is three years (grant-based contract), with a salary graded at £3,229 to £3,612 monthly, after tax but excluding pension and health insurance contributions. We offer generous benefits and hybrid working options, allowing most team members to work two days on-site and three from home. We have a team day every Thursday, and you can choose one other day to work on campus to suit your needs. Interviews will be conducted remotely with selected candidates at the end of August 2025. We would love to see your application, which should include a cover letter outlining your suitability and interest in the role, along with an updated version of your CV. Please note that we can only review applications that include both documents. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us online.
