Requirements

Must:
- MSc in computer science, IT or a related field, or in bioinformatics with demonstrated IT expertise - Expert in Data Modelling and Advanced SQL - Proficiency in Python programming - Proficiency in ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes and tools for large-scale data processing - Strong understanding of relational databases - Extensive hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, including performance tuning, partitioning strategies, indexing techniques, and query optimisation - Extensive experience with Oracle databases, including PL/SQL, and performance optimisation - Familiarity with MySQL/MariaDB - Proven experience in migrating databases across different RDBMS platforms - Experience with migration tools such as Oracle Data Pump, GoldenGate, and custom ETL scripts - Knowledge of data warehousing technologies (e.g., Redshift, BigQuery) - Strong communication and collaboration skills - Proficiency in oral and written English - Potential additional qualifications include: - PhD in relevant fields - Experience with big data technologies (e.g., Apache Spark, Hadoop) - Familiarity with CI/CD tools (e.g., GitLab CI, GitHub Actions) - Familiarity with Java, Google Cloud Platform, AWS - Knowledge of data modelling for AI and ML applications - Familiarity with Neo4J or similar graph databases - Familiarity with data visualisation tools (e.g., Tableau, PowerBI) - Knowledge or affinity with structural biology and bioinformatics

Responsibilities

- Analyse existing data pipelines and identify areas for improvement, optimisation, and scalability - Work closely with Bioinformaticians and annotators to integrate data pipelines with existing systems and applications - Monitor data pipeline performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement solutions to ensure reliability and efficiency - Stay current with industry trends and best practices in data engineering - Recommend new technologies or tools to enhance data infrastructure - Document data pipelines, processes, and workflows for internal reference and knowledge sharing

As a founding partner of the Worldwide Protein Data Bank organization, we uphold the global archive of 3D structural data on macromolecules. Our international and interdisciplinary PDBe team consists of expert data curators, bioinformaticians, scientific software developers, and IT specialists.
