Must:
We are looking for candidates with a degree level qualification in a STEM subject or equivalent experience. You should have experience in the full Software Development Lifecycle, using a modern high-level programming language, and a solid understanding of good software design principles and usability design. Knowledge or experience in developing software to control and monitor scientific or industrial equipment or IoT is preferable. Experience with large and complex code bases is a distinct advantage. Familiarity with technologies such as Python, Java, Spring, JMS message-oriented middleware, Java RMI, the HDF5 file format, the Eclipse RCP platform, REST, and Kubernetes is desirable. Strong communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills are essential, along with a personal interest or experience in science.
Responsibilities
As a software engineer in our Data Acquisition (DAQ) group, you will support and develop software for Diamond’s Spectroscopy science group. Your primary focus will be on developing the DAQ software for the SWIFT Diamond-II Flagship Beamline using our new Athena services. You will work under the technical supervision of the Spectroscopy DAQ team leader and in collaboration with the DAQ Core team. This role involves early feature prototyping, refinement, productionization, integration, and testing. Once SWIFT accepts users, you will provide ongoing support and extension of DAQ capabilities. You will also assist with the migration of existing Spectroscopy beamlines from GDA to Athena and collaborate with scientists to translate their specifications into software requirements.

Our software systems enable world-leading scientific research at Diamond, facilitating operations from low-level control of synchrotron and beamline hardware to data archiving, processing, and visualization. The DAQ group develops software to interface with and control hardware that allows experiments to be performed and monitored, as well as guiding the end-user to tools for data reduction and analysis. We are modernizing our DAQ software platform from GDA to a service-based architecture called Athena to enhance our capabilities for a new collection of advanced Flagship Beamlines.
