Requirements

Must:
We are looking for candidates with significant experience (ideally 10-15 years) in embedded software/firmware for real-time or bare-metal systems. You should possess expert-level knowledge in C for low-level embedded development and have a strong understanding of microprocessor/microcontroller architecture. Proven delivery of drivers, peripheral bring-up, and hardware integration is essential. You must be lab confident with experience using oscilloscopes and logic/protocol analyzers, and be comfortable with board-level investigation and occasional soldering. Familiarity with version control (Git) and Agile practices is required. We value clear, methodical documentation skills as well as the ability to take ownership of solutions from end-to-end. Strong communication skills and the autonomy to hit the ground running are crucial. Desirable qualifications include experience in safety-critical/high-integrity environments (e.g., DO-178C, ISO 26262, IEC 61508), exposure to FPGA or other low-level hardware programming, and familiarity with CI/CD and automated testing.

Responsibilities

In this hands-on role, you will help shape the next generation of intelligent LED cabin lighting for commercial aviation by building robust, real-time embedded software from the ground up. You will own the architecture and design by defining software structure, interfaces, and interactions with hardware and other systems. You'll produce design documents and lead peer reviews. From first principles, you will develop bare-metal/RTOS firmware in C for microcontrollers and programmable logic devices. Low-level development tasks will include writing drivers and real-time control software, interfacing with peripherals such as temperature sensors, I²C, SPI, UART, and CAN. You will develop and maintain bootloaders, secure update mechanisms, and modular, object-oriented components where appropriate. Hands-on debugging will be an essential part of your work, involving triaging hardware/software interactions using oscilloscopes and logic/protocol analyzers, as well as performing fine soldering/rework as needed. You will be responsible for delivering fully documented designs and implementation plans while contributing across unit, integration, and system testing. As a technical leader, you will also mentor a graduate software engineer and set engineering standards within the team.

Description

Your onboarding will require you to be on-site 4 days a week for the first 2-3 months to fully immerse yourself in the lab, hardware, and product context. After this initial period, we offer a hybrid working pattern of 3 days a week, with continuous lab collaboration as projects require. We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including 25 days of annual leave plus bank holidays, a company-wide Christmas shutdown (allocated from your leave allowance), a 5% employer pension contribution, an annual bonus scheme based on both company and individual performance, a 37.5-hour work week, and an early finish every Friday at 1 PM. Additional perks include a free annual eye test, a Cycle to Work scheme, and participation in our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) for confidential support. If you thrive on low-level C, enjoy architecting clean solutions, and like rolling up your sleeves in the lab, we would love to hear from you!
