Requirements
Must:
- A minimum of 7 years of PHP experience, with a solid understanding of Laravel.
- A leadership mindset with the ability to mentor others, shape processes, and provide constructive feedback.
- A hands-on problem solver who enjoys analyzing systems and improving them.
- Experience in upgrading codebases and implementing modern PHP/Laravel practices.
- Strong skills in database management, including query optimization, data modeling, and large-scale architecture.
- Proven track record of embedding automated testing and quality assurance processes within a team.
- Comfortable working with DevOps, AWS services, and basic networking concepts (DNS, DHCP, VPN, routing).
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to represent our company in meetings with external stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Lead backend development in our Laravel PHP monolith, taking ownership of major projects from inception to completion.
- Upgrade and modernize somewhat outdated PHP framework codebases while introducing best practices and modern tooling.
- Mentor and coach junior developers, fostering team growth and technical excellence.
- Advocate for and embed automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, code quality, and robust review processes within the team.
- Collaborate closely with the leadership team to report on monthly technical progress, including participation in stakeholder meetings with the NHS and providing cross-functional updates.
- Work with support and installation teams to ensure smooth customer onboarding and maintain operational stability.
- Take ownership of platform stability, patching processes, and software security measures.
- Design and optimize MySQL (RDS) databases for performance and scalability, particularly focusing on data retention and audit logging.
- Drive DevOps maturity by automating deployments and monitoring systems effectively.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to influence product direction and operational strategies.
Description
We are a fast-growing HealthTech company that is rethinking pharmacy workflows by replacing outdated systems with smart hardware, providing full onboarding and training for our clients. Our platform supports operations, integrates with NHS services, and utilizes robotics. We are looking for a Principal PHP Software Engineer who can lead our engineering efforts, drive technical improvements, and mentor our team. In this role, you will be hands-on with our Laravel-based backend, guiding architectural decisions, and supporting junior team members while championing testing, automation, and robust DevOps processes. Our company operates fully remote, with in-person meetups every two months, and offers a competitive salary of up to £100,000 per annum.
