Requirements
Must:
We are seeking a dedicated DevOps engineer within an Agile environment who meets the minimum criteria. You should have a clear collaborative approach to working with others and a keen desire to share knowledge with colleagues. You understand that the RTGS environment is critical to the UK Payments Systems, which requires a methodical approach and flexibility to work outside core hours as needed.
Minimum Criteria:
- Experience of Agile project delivery (SAFe Framework)
- Experience in researching and developing solutions that expand, modernize, or improve the service and technology portfolios, automate IT operations, reduce costs, or increase service levels, demonstrating technical ownership
- Strong hands-on engineering experience of API Gateways at an enterprise scale, particularly with Apigee
- Strong awareness of SWIFT products and their functionality with APIs
- Proficiency in API documentation tools (e.g., Swagger/OpenAPI)
- Hands-on experience with databases (e.g., SQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, NoSQL)
- Knowledge of OpenShift and RedHat Enterprise Linux
- Familiarity with modern Java and Linux development frameworks and tool stacks (e.g., Micro-Services with Java, Spring/Hibernate, Oracle)
- Understanding of authentication technologies (e.g., SAML)
- Experience working in Agile environments (e.g., SAFe)
- Ability to effectively participate in and support the out-of-hours standby rota, resolving issues as they arise
Essential Criteria:
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Experience building effective working relationships and challenging where appropriate
- Strong attention to detail with a focus on crafting concise, high-quality code
- Analytical thinking and a demonstrated ability for troubleshooting issues and leading change
- Background or practical experience in payment services security, access, and authentication
Responsibilities
As our lead engineer, you will play a pivotal role in mentoring and upskilling less experienced team members while leading Epics and Sprints, including planning activities. You will be part of the RTGS Technology team, providing day-to-day support and developing new capabilities for the Bank of England's Real Time Gross Settlement solution.
Your daily activities may include:
- Leading team stand-up meetings to discuss workloads and address blockers
- Participating in major incident management meetings as the lead engineer on call
- Working on new projects, problem fixes, or other related activities
- Resolving tickets that require detailed knowledge of the application and central bank settlement
- Drafting and raising change requests through the Bank’s formal processes
- Representing technology during audits
- Conducting learning and master class sessions to enhance team skills in the tools and applications you support
- Monitoring the close of the RTGS system based on your cover rota and providing standby cover as needed
You will also be expected to:
- Provide coaching and mentoring to junior colleagues
- Guide solution designers in product roadmaps and end-to-end architecture
- Work with team leaders to identify skills and knowledge needed across the domain and contribute to a comprehensive training plan
- Deliver high-quality software components and accurate documentation that adhere to established guidelines and standards
- Evaluate business requirements, producing estimates, solutions, and functional specifications
- Share knowledge, engage in technical discussions, and assist other team members as required
- Leverage your technical and business experience to support the Bank’s Live and other environments

This position is located in Leeds or London and presents an exciting opportunity for a technically proficient API Developer to take on a leadership role.
