Requirements
Must:
- Proven technical expertise with Microsoft SQL Server (2016-2022) focusing on performance tuning, architecture, and availability at enterprise scale.
- Strong experience with automation and configuration management tools, ideally Chef or Ansible.
- Skilled in scripting languages such as PowerShell for automation and migration tasks.
- Understanding of SRE concepts including SLIs, SLOs, incident response, and reliability metrics.
- Experience supporting and optimizing large-scale, high-availability environments.
- Desirable: Exposure to database standardization and automation at scale. Familiarity with observability tools (Grafana, Prometheus, AppDynamics, or similar).
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a focus on continuous improvement and shared learning.
Responsibilities
- Ensure the availability, performance, and scalability of systems and services through proactive monitoring, maintenance, and capacity planning.
- Analyze and resolve complex database incidents and outages, implementing measures to prevent recurrence.
- Develop automation scripts and tools to reduce manual processes, increase efficiency, and improve reliability.
- Optimize system performance, address bottlenecks, and apply performance tuning best practices.
- Collaborate with development and platform teams to embed SRE principles and improve service reliability.
- Stay current with emerging technologies, contributing to continuous improvement and technical excellence.
Description
We are seeking an experienced Database Reliability Engineer / Site Reliability Engineer to join our high-performing engineering team focused on database performance, automation, and scalability. In this role, you will play a key part in improving the availability and reliability of our mission-critical platforms. This position combines traditional database expertise with modern SRE practices—automation, observability, and proactive problem solving. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with strong Microsoft SQL Server knowledge who enjoy using engineering techniques to enhance resilience, reduce manual intervention, and drive operational excellence. We offer a salary of up to £62,000 plus bonus, medical, and pension benefits. The position includes hybrid working with two days per week onsite in Greater Manchester. You will have the opportunity to shape and evolve our database reliability practices within a modern SRE framework, working on enterprise-scale systems with real technical ownership and impact.
