Requirements
Must:
- 3-5+ years of experience in a senior IT support or IT leadership role.
- Strong knowledge of VMware ESXi and cloud technologies.
- Experience working with external suppliers and managed service providers.
- Proficiency with Microsoft technologies (Exchange, Active Directory, Office).
- Skills in firewall configuration and maintenance.
- Hands-on development experience is beneficial, ideally within C# environments.
Responsibilities
- Lead our IT, digital, and development strategy, balancing hands-on technical work with senior leadership responsibilities.
- Oversee and mentor a small IT team, fostering their development and ensuring best-practice processes.
- Bring software development fully in-house by managing and growing our internal C# development capabilities.
- Provide senior IT support across our headquarters and 100+ UK branches, taking ownership of complex technical issues.
- Present technical strategies and progress directly to the board, aligning technology initiatives with broader business objectives.
- Manage cloud infrastructure, VMware environments, security protocols, system performance, and scalability.
- Collaborate with business units and stakeholders to deliver effective, commercially-focused technical solutions.
- Coordinate with external suppliers, outsourced developers, managed service providers, and technology partners.
- Maintain, monitor, and upgrade our overall IT estate to ensure reliability, security, and long-term stability.
- Lead IT and digital transformation projects from planning to delivery, ensuring clear communication with stakeholders.
- Support budget management and seek opportunities for cost optimization.
- Identify and mitigate technology-related risks across the business.
Description
We are looking for an experienced, forward-thinking Head of IT / Development to join us at our Manchester City Centre headquarters. This high-impact role combines technical leadership, software development oversight, and strategic direction. You will work closely with our board of directors to define and execute a modern digital infrastructure and development roadmap while overseeing a small IT team. Our organization operates over 100 remote sites, providing you with the opportunity to modernize nationwide systems, enhance omnichannel capabilities, and ensure that our technology estate is secure, scalable, and future-ready. The ideal candidate will be a confident communicator, able to engage effectively with both the board and non-technical colleagues. You should be a natural mentor who enjoys supporting junior team members, possess strong problem-solving skills, and be proactive about improving business performance through technology. You must be comfortable balancing operational IT, development oversight, and strategic leadership.
