Requirements
Must:
- Proven track record of identifying and solving complex business problems
- Strong technical leadership experience across large-scale projects or features
- Ability to thrive in ambiguous environments and deliver value
- Excellent communication skills - able to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Experience translating business goals into data-driven insights and outcomes
- Deep expertise in software engineering principles and message-driven architectures
- Experience building high-scale systems within Financial Services
- Background as a Senior Engineer or higher in a complex environment
Responsibilities
- Partner with Technology Leadership to define and drive engineering standards and foster innovation
- Collaborate with Product Managers, Engineering Managers, Architects, and Engineers to shape the future of NatWest Boxed
- Own the technical architecture and design of complex, mission-critical systems
- Lead end-to-end delivery of high-impact backend components
- Enable teams to adopt industry best practices and deliver at pace
- Work across teams and departments to resolve technical challenges
- Help shape the long-term engineering vision, always keeping customer outcomes front of mind
- Identify operational risks and drive improvements in system reliability and performance

Our client, a major UK retail bank, services over 17 million retail customers and offers a range of banking solutions including Business Services, Corporate Banking, Wealth Management, Group Functions, Retail, and Investment Banking. We are seeking a Backend Engineer for a 6-month contract in London (Hybrid) to lead the technical direction across key BaaS missions while influencing architecture and setting engineering standards.
